What is tantra?
The source of what we call tantra probably goes back to the Upanishads – an Indian "secret teaching" that forms the metaphysical and philosophical part of the Vedas (Sanskrit for 'knowledge'). They were written around 600–700 BC. The teachings of those ancient masters were collected into books under the name tantra. These contain 112 pieces of advice and techniques that were reserved for initiates only.
The word tantra
is made up of two Sanskrit words: tanoti (= to expand) and trayate (= to liberate), and roughly means: attaining freedom by expanding consciousness.
Tantra is also a philosophy of life. At its center is the moment in which something happens – the now. A moment experienced fully consciously, mindfully, awake, clearly and with all the senses, without judging it in terms of the past or the future. A unity of mind and body, the fusion of the relative and the absolute.
